6 Tips for Working from Home

1. Stick to your Work Schedule

Try to maintain a similar work routine. That is, keep your alarm set for the same time, get dressed for work (at least your top half anyways!), have breakfast and do something for yourself during the time you would’ve normally been driving to work (like play some music to replicate the radio in the car, or take an extra long shower).

2. Replicate your Office Work Space

Spend a little time, setting up a dedicated office work space somewhere at home.  Even if you already have a home office, many of us use this this space for paying bills and looking on Facebook. However, if you are working from home, it’s important to try and re-create your “work” space.  Perhaps organize a bulletin board & calendar with only your work-related needs – such as business cards, sticky notes and business colleague contact information.

3. Retain Contact with Your Team

Reach out to both your business connections and colleagues throughout the day in order to stay connected and in the know. While some of your team may still be working at the office, it’s important for them to know and hear that you are still involved in the day to day activities at the office and that you are available to offer support if needed.

4. Set Boundaries & Schedule with Family Members

Ask family members to respect your dedicated work time at the office. For example, you might work better by keeping the door closed and anyone who needs your attention, should knock before entering or listen to hear if you’re on the phone or on a video conference call. Or if you have young kids at home, take turns with the kids with maybe a schedule that allows for 2 hrs on and 2 hrs off with the kids or whatever time works for your particular situation.

5. Take your Breaks

Go and get your coffee & grab a bite for lunch just as you would do if you were physically at the office. It’s okay. If you were in the office, you might miss the odd call, as you’ve stepped away for a moment. It’s easy to forget to take these breaks because we’re so busy being diligent. But you’ll be in a better headspace if you feel content after a light snack or a cup of tea in the afternoon, after all do you really want to be the one with loud stomach grumbling noises during a zoom conference call? Just don’t overdo it. Make sure your phone is turned on and you return any missed calls in a timely manner.

6. Maintain a Work Balance

“Go Home” literally at the end of the work day.  Once you are satisfied that you have completed your goals for the day, it’s time to get out of your office space, and “drive home”. You’ve done your job.  Now it’s time to take care of yourself and family. Perhaps use the extra “drive time” to cook a meal from scratch, take a walk or spend some time with someone who’s been craving some attention from you.
